The Earth is undergoing the sixth mass extinction, which involves a severe loss of biological diversity. Countless species are endangered or have gone extinct in the last century. Given this complex panorama, the rediscovery of species considered extinct has significant positive repercussions in many aspects.
The surprising discovery of a population of the Omiltemi rabbit (Silvilagus insonus) in the Sierra Madre del Sur of Guerrero is one of the most important recent news in the conservation of mammal diversity in Mexico and the world. In this issue, an article presenting the synthesis of this significant discovery is featured.
